Abstract

Background Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumours affecting women of reproductive age. Total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) is the definitive treatment, while uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive alternative. This study compares clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction between UAE and TAH.

Methods A prospective observational study including 30 women with symptomatic uterine fibroids ≤10cm. Patients were divided into two groups: UAE(n=15) and TAH (n=15). Follow-up was done at 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

Results UAE showed shorter operative time, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain and shorter hospital stay compared with TAH. Fibroid reduction up to 60% at one year was observed in the UAE group. Psychological well-being improved in 80% of UAE patients and 75% of TAH patients.

Conclusions UAE is a safe and effective minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy for symptomatic fibroids ≤ 10cm with high patient satisfaction and faster recovery.
